The family of South Africa’s late ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa, has performed a sacred traditional ritual at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Paris, where the diplomat tragically died last week. The ceremony, held in his hotel room on the 22nd floor, was conducted to fetch his spirit before his remains were brought home to South Africa.
Mthethwa’s son, Mkhululi Mthethwa, confirmed on Thursday that the ritual had taken place and described it as an emotional yet essential part of their family’s healing process.
“It means everything to us,” Mkhululi said. “We are people who pride ourselves on who we are, and this is part of who we are. We can’t lay him to rest without going through this process. It’s very crucial and sacred to our people.”
A Sacred Step Toward Closure
Mkhululi said the experience was deeply emotional, calling it one of the most traumatic moments the family has faced.
“It’s extremely traumatic. We were granted access to the room to witness his last views. We held a small prayer as a family, trying to absorb the reality of what happened,” he explained.
The family wanted to be present where the ambassador took his last breath, believing it was necessary to connect spiritually before repatriation.
“It’s not easy to see where his last breath was. We wanted to settle any unanswered questions within us,” Mkhululi added.
When asked if the visit provided any clarity on what led to his father’s death, he said the family was still awaiting the outcome of official investigations by French authorities.
“No one will really understand at this moment. For us, it’s about getting a step closer to closure. We are relying on authorities and professionals to give us more detailed information. Right now, our focus is on closure and laying my father to rest.”
Family Liaison and Ongoing Investigation
Mkhululi confirmed that Dr Sifiso Buthelezi, his uncle, would act as the family’s liaison with the South African Police Service (SAPS) investigator in Paris to stay informed about progress in the ongoing probe.
The ambassador, aged 58, is believed to have fallen from his hotel room window, although French investigators have not yet released an official report on the cause of death.
Cultural Significance and Spiritual Duty
According to reports by IOL News, several traditional healers and cultural experts commended the family’s decision to perform the ritual, explaining that failing to do so could have spiritual and generational consequences.
The ritual, commonly known in many African cultures as ukubuyisa or spirit-fetching, symbolises the safe return of a loved one’s spirit to their ancestral home. Without it, families believe the deceased may not rest peacefully among their forebears.
For Mthethwa’s family, this cultural observance was not just symbolic — it was a non-negotiable step toward closure.
“We can’t bury him without this process,” Mkhululi reiterated.
Repatriation and Official Farewell
Mthethwa’s remains are expected to arrive at OR Tambo International Airport on Friday morning, marking his return home from France. The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) confirmed that an official memorial service will be held the same day at the DIRCO Conference Centre, located at the OR Tambo Building in Rietondale, Pretoria.
In recognition of his lifetime of service, President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared a Special Official Funeral (Category 2) for Mthethwa — a rare honour reserved for distinguished public servants and struggle veterans.
“It means a great deal to us,” said Mkhululi. “My father dedicated his life from a young age to the liberation and emancipation of our people. For the state to honour him in this way is a reflection of his lifelong commitment.”
The funeral service will take place on Sunday in KwaMthethwa, KwaZulu-Natal, where the ambassador will be laid to rest among his ancestors.
