Jaecoo J5 Review: China’s Smart SUV Takes on South African Roads and Surprisingly Gets It Right
From Soweto to KZN, the Jaecoo J5 proved that modern SUVs don’t need massive engines to make a statement. Packed with smart tech, comfort and enough driver assistance features to survive South African taxi traffic, this stylish compact SUV blends premium feel with everyday practicality — even if the touchscreen sometimes feels like operating a tablet while dodging potholes.

Review Overview
The first thing you notice about the Jaecoo J5 is that it doesn’t look like a budget SUV trying too hard. It arrives with confidence — clean lines, modern styling and enough road presence to make people ask, “Wait… what car is that?” at the petrol station.

I recently had the chance to drive the J5 as part of the Kasi2Kasi tourism campaign from Soweto through the Free State and down towards KwaZulu-Natal, and surprisingly… this little Chinese SUV handled South African roads better than some drivers handle a 4-way stop.

Now let’s get one thing out of the way: the Jaecoo J5 is not pretending to be a BMW X3 killer or an off-road monster that climbs mountains for breakfast. It’s a lifestyle SUV aimed at people who want comfort, tech, decent fuel economy and a bit of “soft life” energy without donating their entire salary to the bank every month.

Under the bonnet sits a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine pushing out around 115kW and 230Nm of torque through a CVT gearbox. Translation in normal people language? It’s not going to snap your neck at robots, but it moves well enough for everyday driving, long-distance cruising and overtaking trucks without writing your will first.

The power delivery is smooth, and honestly, for South African speed limits, it does the job comfortably. The take-off torque is decent, and once it gets going, it settles into a relaxed cruise surprisingly well. You quickly realise the J5 is less about racing and more about arriving stress-free.
Inside is where Jaecoo clearly spent most of the budget — and I mean that as a compliment.
The cabin feels modern, clean and very tech-heavy. Everything revolves around the massive 13.2-inch infotainment screen. Aircon? Screen. Vehicle settings? Screen. Safety systems? Screen. Probably your ancestors too if you tap long enough.

At first, it feels futuristic. Then after a few days, you start missing physical buttons like an ex you thought you were over.
Changing the aircon temperature while driving takes longer than it should because almost everything is touchscreen-controlled. In a normal car, adjusting the fan speed takes three seconds. In the J5, it can become a mini IT project while dodging taxis and potholes.

But once you get used to it, the system is actually impressive. The car feels semi-smart — almost like driving a smartphone with wheels. The interface is responsive, clean and packed with features usually found in more expensive SUVs.

Then there’s the ADAS safety tech — and this is where the Jaecoo J5 becomes either your best friend or your backseat-driving aunt.
Lane assist, intelligent cruise control, collision warnings… this car wants to help you drive. Sometimes a little too much.

The first time the steering lightly corrected itself on the highway, I nearly had a spiritual awakening. But after spending more time with it, I understood the purpose. For first-time drivers or people nervous in traffic, this thing is brilliant. In South African traffic chaos — especially around taxis that stop whenever their spirit moves them — the J5 genuinely helps reduce stress.
It’s basically your tango partner in traffic. You dance, it assists.
Comfort-wise? Very good.
The seats are supportive, road noise is controlled well enough, and the suspension absorbs most bad roads without making your spine negotiate with your kidneys.
The 480-litre boot is also practical enough for road trips, shopping runs or carrying half your family’s luggage because apparently everyone packs for a 3-day trip like they’re relocating provinces.
One thing that genuinely impressed me was the fuel range. On reserve, the J5 still managed close to 100km before I eventually filled up. That’s the kind of emotional support South Africans need with current fuel prices.
Of course, it’s not perfect.
The CVT gearbox can feel slightly disconnected under hard acceleration, and enthusiastic drivers may want a little more excitement from the engine. But again, that’s not really what this car is trying to be.
The Jaecoo J5 is built for modern lifestyle buyers — people who want premium looks, comfort, tech and practicality without paying German luxury prices. And honestly? For a starting price around the mid-R300k range, it offers a lot more than many expected.
Final verdict?
The Jaecoo J5 feels like that new kid at school everyone underestimated until it started outperforming expectations. It’s stylish, comfortable, loaded with tech and surprisingly capable for South African roads.

No, it won’t turn you into a rally driver. But it will make daily driving feel easier, smarter and a little more premium.

And in 2026, with potholes, traffic, fuel prices and taxi drivers all fighting for your attention at once… maybe peace of mind is the real luxury feature after all.
