Sean “Diddy” Combs could be released from federal prison earlier than previously expected after his projected release date was moved forward again.
Records from the US Federal Bureau of Prisons now list 5 February 2028 as the anticipated release date for the former rapper and music executive. The date has changed several times since he was sentenced last year.
The latest change comes as Combs continues to challenge both his conviction and sentence through the appeals process.
Combs is serving a 50-month sentence
Combs was sentenced to 50 months in federal prison in October 2025 after a Manhattan jury found him guilty on two counts of transporting people across state lines to engage in prostitution.
The sentence followed a high-profile federal trial in which prosecutors pursued significantly more serious charges.
However, the jury acquitted Combs of racketeering conspiracy and two sex-trafficking charges, meaning he was not convicted of those offences.
The 50-month sentence amounted to just over four years in prison, with credit for time Combs had already spent in custody following his September 2024 arrest.
Release date has changed several times
The latest February 2028 date is not the first time Combs’ projected release has been brought forward.
His original Bureau of Prisons estimate was substantially later, but subsequent adjustments moved the projected date forward on several occasions. In June 2026, records had listed 23 February 2028 as his expected release date.
The latest adjustment therefore brings the projected date forward by more than two weeks.
It is important to note that a Bureau of Prisons projected release date can change depending on factors including sentence calculations, credits and prison-related circumstances. It should therefore not be treated as an absolute guarantee of the date Combs will leave custody.
What prosecutors alleged during the trial
The federal case centred on allegations surrounding sexual encounters involving Combs, his former girlfriends and male escorts.
Prosecutors argued that Combs used his wealth and influence to facilitate sexual encounters and alleged that violence, threats and coercion were part of the broader conduct they presented to the jury.
Combs denied the allegations and maintained that the sexual encounters were consensual.
The jury ultimately reached a split verdict, convicting him on the two prostitution-transportation counts while rejecting the more serious racketeering and sex-trafficking charges.
Combs continues to appeal
Combs’ legal team is continuing to challenge the conviction and sentence.
His lawyers have argued that the sentence was unfair and have sought to overturn the conviction, meaning the legal proceedings surrounding the case are not necessarily over even while he remains incarcerated.
For now, however, the latest federal prison records point to 5 February 2028 as the projected date for Combs’ release.
The development gives the 56-year-old music mogul a potentially earlier path out of federal custody, although that date could still change as his appeal and incarceration continue.
