South Africa’s Department of Tourism has announced a leadership transition within the Office of the Director-General, marking the end of a long and distinguished public service career.
Ms Margaret Mathebula officially retired from government on 31 March 2026, concluding more than two decades of service across various roles in the public sector.
A Career Spanning Over Two Decades
Mathebula’s departure brings to a close a career that has spanned over 25 years in government, during which she held multiple positions contributing to the functioning of public institutions.
In her most recent role as Deputy Director: Executive Support in the Office of the Director-General, she served for over a decade, playing a key role in administrative coordination and executive operations.
Colleagues within the department described her as a dedicated and disciplined public servant who consistently prioritised service delivery and institutional stability.
Recognised for Strengthening Stakeholder Relationships
Throughout her tenure, Mathebula was credited with building strong working relationships across the tourism sector, including collaboration with government departments, industry stakeholders, and private sector partners.
Her role often required balancing internal governance processes with external engagement — a responsibility she reportedly handled with professionalism and consistency.
Her exit comes at a time when South Africa’s tourism sector continues to recover and reposition itself in a competitive global market, making institutional continuity particularly important.
New Acting Appointment Takes Effect
Following her retirement, the department has appointed Mr Mbilelo Tshikhudo as Acting Deputy Director: Executive Support, effective from 1 April 2026.
The acting appointment is expected to ensure continuity in the operations of the Director-General’s office while maintaining administrative support at a senior level.
While further details about long-term appointments have not yet been announced, the department indicated that operations will continue without disruption.
Analysis: Stability Key as Tourism Sector Rebuilds
Leadership transitions within government departments often come at critical moments, and this change is no exception.
South Africa’s tourism industry remains a key contributor to economic recovery, job creation, and international investment. Institutional knowledge and operational stability within the Department of Tourism will be essential in sustaining momentum.
The appointment of an acting official suggests a cautious and measured approach, allowing time for a structured transition while maintaining continuity in governance.
What Comes Next
The Department of Tourism is expected to provide further updates regarding permanent appointments and any additional structural changes within the Office of the Director-General.
For now, the focus remains on ensuring a smooth transition and maintaining the department’s operational efficiency.
