The theatre world is mourning the death of Imani Dia Smith, a former child performer who played Young Nala in Broadway’s long-running production of The Lion King. Smith was found fatally stabbed on December 21 at a residence in Edison, New Jersey, and later died in hospital, according to authorities.
Police have arrested and charged her boyfriend, Jordan D. Jackson-Small (35), with first-degree murder, child endangerment, and weapons-related offences. Investigators have stated that the incident was not random and that the case remains under active investigation.
Community in Shock After Tragic Loss
Smith, who appeared in The Lion King on Broadway from 2011 to 2012, was widely remembered as a gifted and vibrant performer whose career began at a young age. Following news of her death, tributes poured in from members of the theatre community, former colleagues, and fans who remembered her talent and warmth.
Beyond the stage, Smith was also a mother to a three-year-old son, a fact that has deepened the sense of loss felt during the holiday season.
Family Launches GoFundMe for Support
In the wake of her death, Smith’s family and supporters launched a GoFundMe campaign, which has nearly reached its $75,000 goal. The funds are intended to assist with funeral expenses, legal costs, and ongoing support for her young son.
The fundraising page describes Smith as a devoted mother and a talented artist who had “her whole life ahead of her.”
A Legacy Rooted in Theatre
Smith came from a family deeply connected to the performing arts. Her mother, Monique Rance-Helper, is a respected hairstylist who has worked extensively in theatre, film, and television. Her credits include The Lion King on Broadway, Eclipsed, Once On This Island, The Lightning Thief, the In the Heights film, and FX’s POSE, among others.
At the time of her death, Imani Dia Smith was 25 years old. She is survived by her son, her parents, and two younger siblings.
