The African National Congress (ANC) has confirmed that Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has been placed on special leave from his Cabinet responsibilities following allegations of collusion with organised criminal groups.
Mchunu is currently under investigation by the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Criminality, Political Interference, and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System, also known as the Madlanga Commission. The ANC stated that Mchunu voluntarily agreed to step aside from his duties pending the outcome of the inquiry.
The ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) said it had deliberated on the matter and concluded that Mchunu would continue performing organisational work while on special leave from his ministerial post.
“The ANC acknowledges Minister Mchunu’s cooperation with both the Madlanga Commission and the ANC Integrity Commission,” the party said. “His actions reflect accountability, discipline, and respect for due process.”
The ruling party reiterated its policy that any member criminally charged must voluntarily step aside from their duties until legal processes are concluded — a principle it described as central to its renewal agenda.
Meanwhile, Mchunu has reportedly handed over his electronic devices, including his cellphone, laptop, tablet, and two unused mobile phones, to investigators from the South African Police Service.
In a statement, Mchunu denied all allegations, saying no evidence has been presented to support claims made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. “Certain individuals are attempting to undermine transparent and legitimate processes currently unfolding,” he stated.
Mkhwanazi had previously accused Mchunu of interfering with sensitive investigations and colluding with criminal elements to dismantle the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team — claims that Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee is also probing.
The ANC said it would continue monitoring developments and review the situation should new information arise. “The movement remains steadfast in its commitment to integrity, transparency, and accountability,” the party concluded.
