A police operation targeting the illicit drug trade in Polokwane has resulted in the arrest of a 40-year-old man and the seizure of drugs with an estimated street value of R20,000.
The suspect, a Nigerian national, was arrested on Monday, 17 August, after members of the Limpopo Provincial Organised Crime Narcotics Unit, Anti-Gang Unit and Organised Crime Unit acted on intelligence about a vehicle allegedly being used to distribute drugs in the city.
Police chase ends in arrest
According to Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, officers were searching for a white Kia Picanto that had allegedly been linked to drug deliveries.
The vehicle was spotted travelling along the R101 and subsequently followed by police.
Police said the driver accelerated after officers began pursuing the vehicle, leading to a chase that continued towards the R37.
“The vehicle was spotted along the R101 and followed. The driver sped off and was pursued until the R37 road, where he abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot,” Ledwaba said.
Officers subsequently apprehended the suspect.
A search of the abandoned Kia Picanto allegedly uncovered quantities of CAT and ROCK drugs concealed inside the vehicle.
Police estimated the street value of the seized drugs at approximately R20,000.
Suspect to face drug charges
The man is expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, where he will face charges relating to the alleged possession and dealing of drugs.
The arrest forms part of ongoing efforts by Limpopo law-enforcement authorities to disrupt organised drug distribution networks operating in the province.
Police have not indicated where the drugs were allegedly destined to be delivered or whether further arrests are expected as the investigation continues.
As the matter is now before the courts, the allegations against the suspect have not been tested in court and he remains legally presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Police vow to target illicit drug networks
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers welcomed the arrest and recovery, saying police would continue targeting people involved in the illegal drug trade.
“Police will continue to disrupt the illicit drug trade and bring those involved before the courts,” Scheepers said.
The seizure also highlights the role of intelligence-led operations in identifying vehicles allegedly used to transport narcotics before they reach their intended destinations.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities could pursue additional leads arising from the seized vehicle and its contents.
