Manchester United have rejected midfielder Kobbie Mainoo’s request to leave the club on loan before the summer transfer window closes.
The 20-year-old academy graduate, once hailed as one of United’s brightest young talents, has grown frustrated at his lack of playing time under new manager Ruben Amorim. Mainoo was left unused in the club’s opening two Premier League fixtures before playing the full 90 minutes in the Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town.
According to The Athletic, Mainoo formally informed United officials of his desire to secure a loan move during a meeting on Thursday. However, the club has refused, instead encouraging him to stay and compete for his place in the squad.
A breakthrough stalled
Mainoo rose to prominence under Erik ten Hag last season, becoming a key figure in United’s midfield. He famously scored in the FA Cup final win over Manchester City and impressed for England at Euro 2024, starting in the final against Spain.
But since Amorim’s arrival, Mainoo has found himself on the periphery. The Portuguese coach has raised questions about the youngster’s physicality in the holding midfield role and has instead relied on more experienced names such as Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount.
England ambitions under pressure
With Thomas Tuchel preparing to announce his England squad for the September World Cup qualifiers, Mainoo’s lack of minutes could jeopardise his international ambitions. The midfielder remains determined to be part of the 2026 FIFA World Cup build-up, but staying benched at Old Trafford may derail that goal.
Up to ten clubs, including Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, are reportedly monitoring the situation. Former United boss Erik ten Hag is also believed to want a reunion with Mainoo at Bayer Leverkusen, though financial constraints may hinder that move.
United standing firm
For now, United remain unmoved. Amorim explained his selection decisions after the recent 1-1 draw with Fulham:
“He is fighting for the position now with Bruno. When I changed to two midfielders, I left Mason Mount there because we needed a goal, and one holding midfielder closer to Bruno. So he just needs to fight for the position like it should be at Manchester United.”
While United blocked Mainoo’s exit, they have been more open to other departures. The club has agreed sales for Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund, and continues to seek buyers for Jadon Sancho and Antony before the transfer deadline.
United, still searching for their first Premier League win of the season, face newly-promoted Burnley at Old Trafford on Saturday — a match that may offer Mainoo another chance to prove he deserves more than a place on the bench.
