The United States closed out the final weekend of 2025 with a grim reminder of its ongoing gun violence crisis, as multiple mass shootings were reported across the country, leaving at least 12 people injured and one person dead.
One of the deadliest incidents unfolded in the early hours of Sunday morning in Chicago’s upscale River North neighbourhood, an area more commonly associated with nightlife and luxury apartments than gunfire.
According to Chicago police, the shooting occurred at around 2:35am in the 400 block of North LaSalle Drive. Four men were reportedly getting into a green Lamborghini SUV when four suspects approached them on foot and opened fire without warning.
A 34-year-old man was shot multiple times and later died at Northwestern Hospital. His death has added to a growing list of gun-related fatalities recorded across the US as the year draws to a close.
Three other men were wounded in the attack. Police said a 36-year-old was shot in the chest, a 43-year-old sustained a gunshot wound to the back, and a 35-year-old was hit multiple times across his body. All three were transported to Northwestern Hospital, where they continue to receive medical treatment. Authorities have not released further details about their conditions.
Investigators have not yet established what led to the shooting, and no motive has been confirmed. The suspects fled the scene in a vehicle shortly after the attack and remain at large.
Footage from the area showed police cordoning off the scene around the distinctive green SUV while forensic teams gathered evidence. Local broadcaster WLS reported a heavy police presence as detectives canvassed the area for witnesses and surveillance footage.
As of Sunday evening, no arrests had been made. Cook County Crime Stoppers has offered a reward of approximately R185,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.
The Chicago shooting was one of several mass shootings reported nationwide over the same weekend, contributing to a troubling pattern of gun violence that continues to affect communities across the United States.
While each incident carries its own circumstances, the cumulative impact remains deeply felt, particularly by families and communities left dealing with sudden loss and trauma. As the year ends, renewed calls for accountability, prevention, and meaningful dialogue around gun violence are likely to intensify.
