The Durban Metropolitan Police Service (DMPS), working closely with the South African Police Service (SAPS), has made a significant breakthrough in combating crime in the Durban beachfront area following the theft of a tourist’s cellphone.
Police were alerted to the incident after a visitor reported their cellphone stolen in the beachfront precinct. Through swift investigative work and cellphone tracking technology, officers were able to trace the device, leading to the arrest of a Congolese national.
Alleged organised criminal activity uncovered
Further investigations revealed that the suspect is allegedly linked to organised criminal activity operating within the beachfront area. According to police intelligence, the individual is believed to have recruited others to steal cellphones and valuables through snatching and theft from motor vehicles.
These crimes reportedly targeted tourists and members of the public, with stolen items being stored and later sold to generate proceeds of crime.
Authorities said the intelligence-led operation disrupted an active criminal network and prevented further victimisation in one of Durban’s most important tourism and economic zones.
Charges faced by the suspect
The suspect is expected to face the following charges:
-
Theft
-
Possession of stolen property
-
Illegal immigration
Items recovered during the operation
Police seized several items believed to be stolen during the arrest, including:
-
4 cellphones
-
6 routers
-
10 tablets
-
1 camera
-
2 smart watches
-
Cash amounting to R26,000
The estimated total value of the recovered items is approximately R100,000. All items have been booked in as exhibits for further investigation.
Police reaffirm commitment to safety
DMPS said it remains resolute in protecting residents and visitors, particularly in public spaces and tourist hotspots such as the Durban beachfront.
“Criminal elements targeting tourists and operating within beachfront and public spaces will be identified, disrupted, and brought before the courts,” the service said.
Authorities added that visible policing and joint operations with SAPS will continue to ensure safety and restore confidence in Durban as a key tourism destination.
