A 16-year-old girl is fighting for her life after being shot multiple times by an Uber driver during an argument over a canceled trip outside a Waffle House in Dunwoody, Georgia, early Sunday morning.
According to police, the incident happened around 2:30 a.m., when a disagreement between the driver and a group of teenage girls turned violent. Authorities said the conflict began after the driver informed the five teens that they could not all properly fit in his vehicle.
“They argued with the driver about the refusal and who should cancel the trip with Uber,”
the Dunwoody Police Department said in a statement.
“The argument escalated, one of the females threatened to kill the driver and struck him in the face.”
Police identified the suspect as 38-year-old Meredith Grundy. Investigators said video footage shows that the victim was shot after stepping out of the vehicle and turning her back toward it.
An arrest warrant states the girl was struck four times — in the shoulder, buttocks, and legs.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she remains in critical but stable condition.
Driver Arrested and Charged
Authorities confirmed that Grundy has been arrested and faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and have not yet released the identity of the teenage victim due to her age.
Uber Responds
In a statement to 11Alive News, Uber condemned the shooting and said the company immediately removed the driver’s access to the platform.
“Our thoughts are with the rider as she recovers from this horrifying attack,” the company said.
“We removed the driver’s access to the platform as soon as this was reported to us, and we stand ready to support law enforcement with their investigation.”
Uber also noted that under Georgia state law, rideshare companies cannot prohibit drivers from carrying firearms.
Community Shocked by Violence
The incident has sparked outrage and renewed debate about rideshare safety policies and gun laws in Georgia.
Residents of Dunwoody expressed disbelief that a routine rideshare pickup could turn into such a violent confrontation, leaving a teenager critically injured.
Police have urged witnesses or anyone with video footage to come forward as the investigation continues.
