The Independent Police Investigating Directorate (IPID) has arrested suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi in connection with an ongoing investigation into the alleged theft of precious stones valued at R14.9 million.
The arrest took place on Friday evening after investigators, supported by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), executed a warrant of arrest at a property in Bedfordview.
Authorities had earlier searched for Mkhwanazi at a residence in Alberton but were unable to locate him before tracing him later in the day.
His arrest marks the latest development in a high-profile investigation involving allegations of robbery and the disappearance of valuable gemstones from a Johannesburg property.
Investigation centres on alleged Killarney robbery
According to investigators, the case relates to the alleged theft of precious stones worth approximately R14.9 million from a property in Killarney.
Authorities allege that Mkhwanazi was the outstanding suspect sought in connection with the investigation, making him the final person for whom an arrest warrant had been issued in the matter.
The allegations against him have not yet been tested in court, and he remains entitled to the presumption of innocence unless and until proven guilty.
Earlier arrests already before the courts
The investigation has already resulted in the arrest of several other suspects.
Earlier this week, three accused appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court in connection with the same investigation.
They face charges that include robbery with aggravating circumstances.
During those proceedings, two of the accused were granted bail of R5,000 each.
The charges against the third accused were subsequently withdrawn.
The reasons for the withdrawal were not disclosed during the announcement, and prosecutors may determine any further action based on the progress of the investigation.
IPID’s role in police accountability
IPID is an independent oversight body responsible for investigating allegations of serious criminal conduct involving members of the South African Police Service and municipal police departments.
Its mandate includes probing allegations of corruption, assault, deaths involving police action and other serious offences where law enforcement officials may be implicated.
