Former African National Congress (ANC) North West treasurer and businessman Suliman Carrim has been arrested at OR Tambo International Airport, reportedly moments before he was due to board a flight to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The 49-year-old was arrested on Thursday evening by the Commission’s Recommendations Task Team (CRTT) in connection with his alleged failure to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
Carrim’s arrest marks a significant development in the commission’s efforts to secure his attendance as it investigates allegations of corruption and questionable dealings involving individuals linked to the South African criminal justice system.
Carrim Arrested Before UAE-Bound Flight
According to the information provided, Carrim was preparing to leave South Africa when members of the CRTT apprehended him at OR Tambo International Airport.
His arrest follows difficulties in securing his appearance before the Madlanga Commission. The commission reportedly opened a case against him after he failed to appear as required.
Carrim is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Friday, where the matter is due to come before the court.
Businessman Implicated in Alleged Dealings With Cat Matlala
Carrim has also been implicated in allegations of corruption and questionable dealings involving controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
The allegations form part of the wider scrutiny surrounding the Madlanga Commission, which is examining issues connected to alleged corruption and misconduct.
However, being implicated in allegations does not, in itself, establish criminal guilt. The claims against Carrim would need to be tested through the appropriate legal processes.
What Happens Next?
Carrim’s expected court appearance is likely to clarify the immediate legal proceedings arising from his alleged failure to appear before the commission.
The commission’s ability to obtain the attendance of people whose testimony it seeks remains important to its inquiry. Further developments will depend on the court proceedings and any subsequent steps taken by the commission.
