African football’s governing body, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has confirmed that it will take “appropriate action” following shocking scenes during the AFCON 2025 final between Senegal and Morocco.
In a statement released on Monday, CAF strongly condemned the behaviour that unfolded during Sunday night’s high-stakes clash in Rabat, but stopped short of blaming either national team directly.
Players walk off amid referee controversy
Tensions boiled over late in normal time with the match locked at 0–0, when referee Jean-Jacques Ndala awarded a penalty to hosts Morocco deep into stoppage time.
In protest, most of the Senegalese players walked off the pitch, surrounding the referee and delaying play. At the same time, clashes reportedly broke out in the stands, where a group of Senegal supporters were involved in confrontations with Moroccan security personnel.
Penalty drama and Senegal victory
After several minutes, Senegal’s players returned to the field. In a dramatic turn, goalkeeper Edouard Mendy saved the penalty, swinging momentum back in Senegal’s favour.
Senegal went on to score the decisive goal in extra time, securing a 1–0 victory and lifting the AFCON 2025 trophy.
CAF condemns “unacceptable behaviour”
CAF described the scenes as unacceptable and said it was reviewing all available footage.
“The Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) condemns the unacceptable behaviour from some players and officials during the CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 Final between Morocco and Senegal in Rabat,” the statement read.
“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organizers.”
Disciplinary process underway
CAF confirmed that the matter has been referred to its disciplinary structures.
“CAF is reviewing all footage and will refer the matter to competent bodies for appropriate action to be taken against those found guilty.”
Further details on possible sanctions or charges are expected once the review process is completed.
