Actor Bongani Gumede, best known for his roles on Isibaya and more recently Scandal!, is reportedly taking legal action against retail giant Pick n Pay after sustaining injuries in an alleged in-store accident.
According to reports, Gumede is seeking R1 million in damages after he allegedly tripped over an unmarked trolley at Pick n Pay’s Steeledale store. The incident has reportedly affected his health and professional commitments.
Alleged accident at Steeledale store
City Press reported via its X account on Sunday, 14 December 2025, that Gumede intends to pursue legal action against the retailer following the incident.
The actor claims that the trolley was not clearly marked, leading to the fall. He is reportedly seeking compensation for medical expenses, loss of income, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.
Legal action against large retailers for in-store injuries often centres on whether reasonable safety measures were in place at the time of the incident.
Loss of income and career impact
According to media reports, Gumede argues that the injury has prevented him from attending auditions, directly impacting his ability to earn a living in an already competitive entertainment industry.
He is said to be claiming damages for loss of income, as well as compensation for the physical and emotional effects of the injury.
At the time of the reported incident, Gumede had recently joined eTV’s soapie Scandal! in March 2025, where he played the character Ephraim. The show has since been cancelled.
Retailer yet to comment
Pick n Pay has not yet publicly responded to the reported legal action.
Briefly News confirmed that it contacted the retailer for comment on Sunday, 14 December 2025, and indicated that an update would be provided once a response is received.
As with all civil claims, the allegations remain untested until considered by a court.
Respected career and academic achievement
Beyond his acting career, Gumede has earned respect for his academic achievements. The veteran actor, who has more than a decade of experience in the industry, previously inspired many South Africans after graduating from the University of the Witwatersrand.
He obtained a postgraduate diploma in arts and shared the milestone publicly, drawing widespread praise from fans and fellow creatives.
Supporters took to social media at the time to congratulate Gumede, applauding his commitment to personal growth alongside his acting career.
Legal process to follow
It remains unclear when formal court proceedings may begin or whether the matter will be settled out of court.
Pick n Pay, one of South Africa’s largest retail chains, has previously stated its commitment to customer safety across its stores. Whether the retailer will contest the claim or seek an alternative resolution is yet to be seen.
