Mumbai Indians have parted ways with South African cricket icon Mark Boucher, confirming the return of former Sri Lankan captain, Mahela Jayawardene, as their head coach ahead of the 2025 IPL season. Jayawardene, who had previously led the franchise from 2017 to 2022, is one of the most successful T20 cricket coaches, having guided Mumbai to three IPL titles during his earlier tenure.

This move comes after a disappointing season for Mumbai Indians under Boucher’s leadership, where the team finished at the bottom of the points table. Despite making the playoffs in 2023, the team struggled in the 2024 season, winning only four out of their 14 matches.

Jayawardene, 47, returns to Mumbai Indians in a key role, expressing excitement over the opportunity to build on the franchise’s history. Reflecting on his earlier stint, he commented:

“In 2017, the focus was on bringing together a talented group of individuals to play the best cricket ever, and we did very well. Now, to return, at the same moment in history, where we look ahead at the future and the opportunity to further strengthen the love of MI, build on the vision of the owners, and continue to add to the history of Mumbai Indians, is an exciting challenge I am looking forward to.”

During his earlier time with Mumbai, Jayawardene transitioned to a new role as the Global Head of Cricket in 2022. He oversaw MI’s expansion across international leagues, including MI New York (MLC), MI Emirates (ILT20), and MI Women’s (WPL), all of which saw success under his oversight. Now, his coaching responsibilities are set to focus exclusively on the Mumbai Indians’ IPL campaign once again.

Mark Boucher’s Legacy and Departure

Mark Boucher, widely regarded as one of the greatest wicketkeepers in the history of cricket, played a total of 147 Tests, 295 ODIs, and 25 T20Is for South Africa, amassing over 10,000 runs. He also holds a remarkable 999 catches and stumpings across all formats. His leadership of Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024 fell short of expectations, leading to the franchise’s decision to part ways with him.

While Boucher’s departure marks the end of his coaching role with Mumbai, his legacy as a cricketer remains undeniable. His experience and tactical acumen will likely see him continue to influence the sport in other capacities.

Looking Ahead: IPL 2025 and Jayawardene’s Vision

With the 2025 IPL dates yet to be confirmed, all eyes will be on how Jayawardene shapes Mumbai Indians moving forward. The franchise will be keen to recapture the dominance they achieved under his leadership. His return is expected to bring about a renewed focus on success, with a deep commitment to the MI ethos.
