An 18-year-old woman has been arrested in Kuruman, Northern Cape, after admitting that she falsely accused a police officer of rape, according to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
The woman initially alleged that a 24-year-old police constable had raped her at a guest house on 23 September 2026.
The allegation triggered an investigation by IPID and resulted in the officer being arrested the following day on a rape charge.
However, the case took a dramatic turn before the constable was due to appear in court.
Woman admits rape allegation was false
According to IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping, the woman approached an IPID investigator on 25 September and admitted that she had deliberately made a false statement.
Suping said the woman explained that she had made the allegation because the police officer had allegedly failed to pay her the agreed R400 following their consensual sexual encounter.
“Prior to the police officer’s court appearance today, on 25 September 2026, the 18-year-old woman informed the IPID investigator that she had filed a false statement,” Suping said.
The rape case against the constable was subsequently withdrawn in court.
18-year-old now faces perjury charge
Following her admission, authorities opened a perjury case against the woman.
IPID said the case relates to deliberately providing false information under oath and allegedly misusing state investigative resources.
The development means the original rape allegation will no longer proceed against the police officer on the information provided by the complainant.

IPID warns against false reporting
IPID said the incident demonstrates the consequences of deliberately making false allegations to law enforcement.
“The actions of the 18-year-old woman undermine the integrity of the justice system and divert critical investigative capacity away from genuine cases,” Suping said.
The watchdog warned communities that false reporting would not be tolerated.
“As IPID we would like to sensitise our communities that false reporting will not be tolerated, and decisive action will be taken against individuals who attempt to misuse the justice system for personal gain,” Suping added.
Why false allegations can have serious consequences
The Kuruman case also highlights the resources required when a serious criminal allegation is reported.
A rape complaint can trigger investigations involving police, forensic personnel, prosecutors and independent oversight bodies. When an allegation is subsequently admitted to be false, those resources may have been deployed unnecessarily while investigators are taken away from other cases.
At the same time, authorities must continue to approach genuine sexual-offence allegations seriously and investigate them properly.
In this case, the rape charge against the constable was withdrawn only after the alleged complainant told investigators that her original statement was false.
