International supermodel Anok Yai has shared an emotional and deeply personal health update, revealing that she was recently diagnosed with a congenital defect that had been silently affecting her heart and lungs for over a year.
The 28-year-old Model of the Year took to Instagram on Friday, 19 December, to explain how a condition she had lived with unknowingly for most of her life began to take a serious toll on her health.
“For the past year, I’ve been dealing with this silent battle,” Yai wrote. She explained that the congenital defect caused her heart to work overtime, which in turn slowly damaged her lungs.
Symptoms That Could No Longer Be Ignored
What had once been asymptomatic gradually developed into alarming symptoms. Yai revealed she experienced chest pains, persistent coughing, coughing up blood, and occasional difficulty breathing.
Despite the severity of the symptoms, she admitted she initially tried to push through them while continuing to work and searching for the right medical care.
“I kept waiting for the right doctor, the right time,” she shared, adding that she eventually realised there would never be a perfect moment to prioritise her health.
Undergoing Robotic Lung Surgery
Yai confirmed that she recently underwent robotic lung surgery, a minimally invasive procedure that uses robotic technology and small incisions to operate on the lungs.
In photos and videos shared alongside her post, the South Sudanese-American model is seen recovering in a hospital bed at NYU Langone Health in New York City. She is shown reading books, resting, and using an oxygen machine as part of her recovery process.
She also expressed deep gratitude to her medical team, thanking her surgeons and hospital staff for guiding her through what she described as an intense and life-altering experience.
“The Universe Has a Way of Slowing You Down”
Reflecting on the ordeal, Yai acknowledged that the diagnosis forced her to confront her own limits.
“I’ve always thought I could outwork or outrun anything,” she wrote. “But the universe has a way of slowing you down and waking you up.”
Her words resonated strongly with fans, many of whom praised her honesty and courage in sharing such a vulnerable chapter of her life.
Using Her Platform to Inspire Others
By opening up about her diagnosis, Yai has sparked wider conversations around invisible illnesses, early medical intervention, and the importance of listening to one’s body — even when life and career pressures are at their peak.
Support has poured in from fans, fellow models, and celebrities, with many crediting her story for encouraging them to take their own health concerns more seriously.
Yai’s message is clear: strength is not just about endurance, but also about knowing when to stop, seek help, and heal.
