At the Africa Coastal Marine Tourism Conference, Sibonelo Nzimande, Chief Director for Enterprise Development & Transformation at the National Department of Tourism, delivered a forward-thinking address focused on the role of technology and inclusion in shaping the future of tourism.
Leveraging Technology to Transform Tourism
Nzimande highlighted the growing importance of technology, digital tools and innovation in addressing some of the key challenges facing the tourism sector today.
He emphasised that embracing modern solutions—from digital platforms to smart tourism systems—can help improve efficiency, enhance visitor experiences and solve operational challenges within the industry. More importantly, technology can play a critical role in preserving South Africa’s key tourism attractions, particularly within coastal and marine environments.
Innovation as a Driver of the Ocean Economy
Focusing on the ocean economy, Nzimande encouraged stakeholders to adopt innovative approaches that unlock new opportunities within coastal and marine tourism.
He noted that innovation is not just about advancement, but about creating sustainable solutions that balance economic growth with environmental preservation. By integrating technology into tourism strategies, the sector can better manage resources, protect ecosystems and ensure long-term viability.
Inclusive Growth for SMEs
A central theme of his address was the need for inclusive participation, particularly for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
Nzimande stressed that as the tourism sector evolves, it is essential to ensure that SMEs are not left behind. Instead, they should be empowered through access to technology, digital tools and innovation ecosystems that enable them to compete and thrive.
By supporting SMEs, the tourism industry can drive broader economic inclusion, ensuring that the benefits of the ocean economy reach communities, entrepreneurs and emerging businesses.
Building a Future-Ready Tourism Sector
His message reinforced the need for a future-ready tourism sector—one that is digitally enabled, innovative and inclusive.
Through collaboration between government, industry and small businesses, South Africa can position itself as a leader in sustainable coastal and marine tourism, while unlocking new economic opportunities across the value chain.
