The 2024 African Bank Soweto Marathon marked its 29th anniversary in grand style, drawing a record-breaking 25,000 participants. Known as South Africa’s “People’s Race,” the marathon brought runners and supporters to the vibrant streets of Soweto, making it the country’s largest one-day race and a cornerstone of athleticism and community spirit.
Starting bright and early at 5:30 am, the marathon’s 42.2 km competitors set off, battling the morning heat—a traditional challenge for this annual race. Residents from across Soweto lined the streets, offering endless support and cheer, their enthusiasm resonating throughout the township. An hour later, the 21.1 km half-marathon runners joined the course, with the 10 km participants following soon after, creating a dynamic and lively scene as runners of all backgrounds celebrated the event together.
With a variety of athletes—from elite competitors to enthusiastic community runners—the marathon proved more than a race, evolving into a celebration of Soweto’s rich heritage and the power of community.
