Ukraine is stepping up its defence efforts against Russia with a bold and creative approach. Recently, the Ukrainian military received six F-16 fighter jets, a clear sign of continued American support for their resistance. But with the ever-present threat from Russia’s powerful air force, Ukraine has had to get ingenious when it comes to deploying these jets, and their methods seem straight out of a spy movie.
F-16s Launch from Highways
The Ukrainian military has turned to an unconventional tactic: using sections of highways for F-16 takeoffs and landings. According to satellite images, these fighter jets are now launching from expressways rather than traditional military bases. This strategy prevents the Russian military from easily targeting the jets while on the ground.
By transforming sections of highways, typically used by ordinary motorists, Ukraine has turned its infrastructure into an asset in their defence strategy. For an hour at a time, these sections are blocked off to traffic, allowing enough space for the jets to take off and land. This method ensures that the jets can operate discreetly without risking exposure at known military bases.
Keeping the Jets Hidden
The goal for Ukraine is to stay a step ahead of Russia. These highway launches make it difficult for the Russian air force to track or target the F-16s. The approach also echoes scenes straight out of spy films, where elaborate and surprising methods are used to escape detection.
While these tactics are extraordinary, they reflect the intense pressure Ukraine’s military faces. The country’s forces must constantly outthink and outmanoeuvre Russia’s superior numbers and firepower. This new method, though unconventional, gives Ukraine a fighting chance to keep their air power intact.
