Aerolene Griebelaar, a mother of two from Cloetesville in the Western Cape, has become a beacon of hope and inspiration, proving that dreams can be realised through determination and hard work. After seven years of relentless effort, Griebelaar walked the stage at Stellenbosch University to receive her Bachelor of Theology. Her journey, though challenging, has showcased the unmatched strength of a woman and mother pursuing her goals against all odds.
Balancing Work, Life, and Studies
Since joining Stellenbosch University as a cleaner in 2017, Griebelaar’s daily life has been a delicate balancing act. Her workday begins at 7am and ends at 4pm, followed by online classes from 6pm to 8pm. Despite the long hours and responsibilities, she never wavered in her commitment to her studies.
“My interest in theology began at 15 when I felt a calling that shaped my life. Initially, I wanted to become a social worker, but those plans did not materialise,” she explained.
Her journey took a significant turn in 2019 when Professor Reggie Nel, Dean of the Faculty of Theology, encouraged her to enrol in the faculty’s new part-time hybrid programme. The programme was designed to provide access for older students seeking to further their education.
“She embraced the opportunity with an open heart,” said Professor Nel. “Her work ethic, perseverance, and dedication have been remarkable. She inspires all of us by imagining and creating new futures.”
A Support System That Made It Possible
Griebelaar credits her success to the unwavering support of her family, especially her husband, who played a vital role in managing household responsibilities.
“My husband was amazing. He ensured the kids were ready for school while I was already at work. Some evenings, I stayed on campus until 11pm to complete assignments. Free time became a thing of the past,” she said.
Balancing her studies and family life required creative solutions. “The kitchen became our shared workspace. I placed my laptop on the microwave to attend classes, my son worked at the counter, and my daughter used the freezer as her desk. This allowed me to help them with their schoolwork while I studied,” she recalled.
Faith and Personal Growth Through Education
For Griebelaar, the degree is more than a qualification; it represents personal and spiritual growth.
“This journey has brought me closer to God and opened new worlds. It has helped me discover my identity and improved my outlook on life,” she said. “This degree is one of the highlights of my life. Although it came with sacrifices, it was worth it.”
Giving Back to the Community
Even during her studies, Griebelaar initiated the “AG Empowerment” project to support her community. She continues to work with young people, fostering growth and development.
Looking to the future, Griebelaar plans to establish a counselling practice at her home, offering funeral services and officiating marriages to provide essential support to her community. “My ultimate goal is to make meaningful contributions to the well-being of those around me,” she said.
A Story of Triumph and Inspiration
Aerolene Griebelaar’s journey from cleaner to graduate is a testament to perseverance and the power of faith and family. Her story inspires countless others to pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles.
