Ethiopian Airlines and the African Development Bank have formalized their partnership to develop the Bishoftu International Airport Development Project, a groundbreaking initiative set to redefine air travel in Africa. The ambitious project, valued at R148.6 billion ($7
R128.66.8 billion), is expected to boost Ethiopia’s airport capacity significantly, enabling it to accommodate 60 million passengers annually by 2040—a dramatic increase from the current 17 million.

During the signing ceremony, Ethiopian Finance Minister Ahmed Shide underscored the importance of AfDB’s financial backing, which includes an investment of R22.8 billion ($1
R18.38.2 billion). He credited Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s economic reforms for fostering such transformative initiatives and urged the AfDB to continue supporting Ethiopia’s macroeconomic reforms and renewable energy projects.
The agreement was signed by Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group, and Nnenna Nwabufo, Vice President for Regional Development, Integration, and Strategy at AfDB. The project will be located in Abusera, Oromia, near Bishoftu, marking a significant milestone in Ethiopia’s aviation expansion efforts.

AfDB President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina praised Ethiopia’s economic progress, highlighting the country’s impressive 8.1% GDP growth over the past year.
