Former Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has been appointed as the convener of Mpumalanga by Jacob Zuma, the president of uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, in a strategic move aimed at addressing leadership gaps and fortifying the party’s presence in the province.
The MK Party (MKP) announced this pivotal decision on Thursday, describing it as a step toward reinforcing its political strength and preparing for the 2026 local government elections. The party seeks to maintain its momentum after a surprising performance in the 2024 national and provincial elections, where it secured 14.58% of the vote, placing third and surpassing the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
Mkhwebane’s New Role and Team
Mkhwebane’s appointment aims to bring “respect, honesty, and dedication” to the province, according to the MKP statement. Zuma also announced the following leadership appointments to fill key vacancies in Mpumalanga:
- Charles Masombuka – Deputy Convenor
- AB Mkhatshwa – Coordinator
- Dr Nelisiwe Msibi – Deputy Coordinator
- Skhwameni Nkuna – Organiser
- Njabulo KaChibi – Deputy Organiser
- Donald Maphanga – Fundraiser
- Mbalenhle Masinga – Deputy Fundraiser
These appointments were made in accordance with the MKP constitution and after extensive consultations with party officials.
Addressing Leadership Challenges
Mkhwebane steps into a province marked by controversies, particularly surrounding former provincial leader Mary Phadi. Phadi faced allegations of corruption and plotting to harm a rival party member, General Tough Mdluli.
Phadi’s tenure was marred by accusations of hiring hitmen and tampering with the party’s provincial list to position herself at the top. These claims led to her removal, legal challenges, and eventual reinstatement by the Mpumalanga High Court in November 2024. However, the party officially expelled her in December, declaring the decision final.
The party’s decision to bring Mkhwebane on board reflects its commitment to resolving internal conflicts and strengthening leadership in Mpumalanga.
Looking Ahead
As the MKP prepares for the 2026 local government elections, Mkhwebane’s leadership is expected to play a crucial role in consolidating the party’s influence in Mpumalanga and beyond. Her appointment underscores Zuma’s strategy to stabilize the party and ensure a cohesive structure ahead of key political battles.
