Johannesburg – In a bold move to support digital inclusion and honour Mandela Month, Vodacom has launched an initiative allowing select prepaid customers to upgrade from 2G handsets to a 4G Kicka 6 smartphone for just R67.
The offer, which normally retails at R699, marks a massive R632 saving and forms part of Vodacom’s broader mission to combat poverty and inequity through accessible technology.
Kickstarting Digital Access: From 2G to 4G for R67
Initially available at select Vodacom stores in KwaZulu-Natal, the R67 smartphone deal will expand to Mpumalanga and Limpopo in the coming weeks. Customers who take up the offer and recharge with a minimum of R29 will receive a 20GB data bundle valued at R149, boosting access to essential digital services.
“By offering affordable 4G smartphones, we are empowering people to participate fully in the digital economy,” said Rishaad Tayob, director of Vodacom South Africa’s consumer business.
Mandela Month and Madiba’s Legacy
The campaign is directly inspired by the legacy of Nelson Mandela, who spent 67 years fighting for freedom and equality. Vodacom’s R67 smartphone initiative symbolically mirrors those years and underscores the company’s theme for 2025: “It is in our hands to combat poverty and inequity.”
“Following Madiba’s legacy, Vodacom is proud to turn that belief into action in the communities we serve,” Tayob added.
Mandela Day Surprise and Delight: 67 More Phones Up for Grabs
On Mandela Day, Friday 18 July 2025, Vodacom will also give away 67 smartphones to eligible customers as part of its “Surprise and Delight” campaign. Winners will be selected from participants in the Daily V-Up journey and must visit the Vodacom World Store in Midrand to trade in their 2G devices.
Ongoing Efforts to Democratise Connectivity
Vodacom has been steadily rolling out affordable 4G devices to encourage mass digital adoption in South Africa. These include:
- Hisense U607 – R399
- Vodacom V54 – R499
- Mobicel S4 – R199
- Itel IT9300 – R249
These devices form part of the company’s broader push to bring connectivity to underserved communities, especially where digital access remains limited due to cost and infrastructure.
“By making 4G device ownership more accessible, we can connect everyone to a better future,” said Tayob.
Conclusion: A Connected Future Within Reach
As South Africa commemorates Mandela Month, Vodacom’s latest campaign proves that big change often starts with small steps — or in this case, R67. By upgrading thousands of users to 4G at near-zero cost, the telecoms giant is not just selling phones — it’s bridging the digital divide and enabling a more inclusive digital future.
