The family of popular South African musician Tebogo G Mashego, best known for his hit Biri Marung, has issued a statement addressing growing concerns about his mental health.
In the statement, the family expressed gratitude for the public’s support while urging privacy during what they described as a “difficult period.”
“We would be remiss if we did not start by thanking the public of South Africa, especially Tebogo’s fans, for the outpouring of support over the past week. Your concerns and messages of love have not gone unnoticed,” the family said.
They added that they would not be releasing further details at this stage, emphasizing that only updates directly issued by the family should be regarded as authoritative.
Family Requests Privacy and Prayers
The Mashego family appealed for understanding and respect, requesting that the public and media refrain from visits.
“As the family of Tebogo Mashego, we respectfully request time and privacy to process and come to terms with the recent incident involving our child. We ask that the public and media allow us space during this difficult period,” the statement read.
They further restricted access, saying:
“No media, friends or colleagues should attempt to visit Tebogo. Access will be limited to immediate family members only.”
The family closed their statement with a call for compassion:
“We trust this request will be met with compassion, respect and understanding.”
Recent Events Leading to Public Concern
Mashego returned to South Africa recently after a turbulent period in Nigeria. Reports indicate that he was stranded there on 19 September after missing a flight with Ethiopian Airlines.
A video of the singer, visibly emotional, circulated widely on social media, showing him expressing frustration and disappointment over the missed flight. He later used social media to accuse his team of mistreatment, claiming he was owed money for performances already completed. In several clips, he appealed for donations to cover a new flight ticket.
Reports of Arrest and Clarification
Amid his social media rants, speculation intensified when blogger Musa Khawula shared a video claiming Mashego had been arrested for defamation and slander. The footage showed him being escorted into a police van, sparking widespread alarm among fans.
However, Crime Watch SA later clarified that Mashego had not been arrested. Instead, they explained that he allegedly displayed abnormal behaviour and acted violently, leading to police intervention for public safety.
According to Laudium SAPS, officers were called after reports that Mashego had assaulted people without apparent cause. Police removed him from the scene after he visibly resisted.
Looking Ahead
For now, the Mashego family has stressed that all communication will come directly from them. They have asked for continued prayers for the artist while they work to ensure his wellbeing.
