South African business mogul and socialite Shauwn Mkhize’s luxurious La Lucia home in Durban became the center of a dramatic raid on Tuesday. The raid was conducted by the South African Revenue Service (SARS) alongside the South African Police Service (SAPS), following a court-approved search-and-seizure order.
The high-profile operation is part of an ongoing legal battle between Mkhize and SARS over an alleged R37 million in unpaid taxes. SARS announced the raid as a pivotal moment in its efforts to combat tax evasion, with a focus on holding high-profile individuals accountable.
SARS Issues Preservation Order
The Durban High Court granted SARS a preservation order, empowering the tax body to secure assets and collect evidence of potential tax law violations. According to SARS, this action is aimed at preventing the dissipation of assets that could be used to recover the unpaid taxes.
SARS emphasized its commitment to upholding the Tax Administration Act No. 28 of 2011, particularly section 163, which allows for the preservation of assets in cases of suspected tax evasion. “This enforcement action underscores our strategic objective to deter taxpayers who intentionally defy the law,” SARS said in a statement.
Construction Industry Under Scrutiny
SARS has intensified its focus on the construction industry in recent years to ensure compliance with tax regulations. The agency stated that it has collaborated with SAPS and the Hawks to safeguard the integrity of South Africa’s tax system.
“This raid is part of a broader crackdown on non-compliance, ensuring that all taxpayers meet their obligations,” the statement added.
SARS Commissioner: ‘No One Is Above the Law’
SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter delivered a stern message, asserting that no individual is exempt from the law, regardless of their social or economic status. He highlighted the critical role that taxes play in supporting vulnerable South Africans, including the elderly and children.
“SARS will continue to act decisively against those who willfully defy the law. Today’s operation should send a clear message that law enforcement will not tolerate tax evasion,” Kieswetter stated.
Legal Battle Continues
As of the time of publication, local police had not commented on the raid. However, the preservation order and search warrant signify a serious escalation in SARS’ efforts to recover the alleged tax debt from Mkhize.
This raid marks a crucial moment in South Africa’s ongoing battle against financial misconduct, particularly among influential figures.
