Corey Walker, a suspect in the murder of Brooklyn drill rapper Pop Smoke, has been sentenced to 29 years behind bars for his role in the tragic home invasion that led to the rapper’s death.
Courtroom Apology and Sentencing
On Friday, February 21, Walker stood before the Los Angeles County court and expressed remorse for his involvement.
“Even though the Jackson family isn’t here in court today, I would like to sincerely apologize for my unforgivable actions, although there’s no apology that amounts to the taking of someone’s life,” Walker said, per Rolling Stone.
He also issued an apology to his own family and community, acknowledging the pain and embarrassment his actions had caused.
Walker initially faced life in prison without parole but accepted a plea deal in early February. He pleaded guilty to one count of voluntary manslaughter and two counts of robbery, with additional firearm and gang enhancements. In exchange, prosecutors dropped the murder charge.
Juvenile Sentences and Case Details
Three other individuals involved in the crime were only 15, 16, and 17 years old at the time of the February 2020 home invasion. They were convicted in juvenile court and reached separate plea agreements.
In court, Walker admitted his responsibility: “Today I take responsibility for my dreadful partake in these crimes, and as I begin my road to rehabilitation, I will steer clear from negative behavior.”
The Tragic Night in Hollywood Hills
Pop Smoke, born Bashar Barakah Jackson, was killed during a home invasion robbery at a Hollywood Hills rental. According to the Los Angeles Times, the rapper had unintentionally revealed his location and valuables on Instagram Stories earlier that day, making him a target.
The attackers ambushed him while he was in the shower, demanding cash and jewelry. Among the stolen items was his Rolex watch, which they later sold for just ZAR 38,000 ($2,000
R37,675.52 USD converted to ZAR).
Despite efforts to save him, Pop Smoke succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. He was only 20 years old.
