In an unexpected twist, MacG, Sol Phenduka, and Ghost Lady—the dynamic trio behind the wildly popular Podcast and Chill—found themselves on the other side of the mic. Veteran radio presenter David Mashabela took charge of the interview in a special episode released on January 2, offering fans a rare glimpse into the lives and reflections of their favourite hosts.
Reflecting on Success and the Year That Was
The episode, filmed before Christmas, gave the hosts a chance to recap a momentous 2024. With between 130 to 150 episodes produced during the year, the podcast kept its “Chillers” engaged and entertained with its unfiltered conversations and high-profile guests.
When asked about the podcast’s future direction, MacG admitted the team doesn’t plan too far ahead. “We literally just take it episode by episode. Obviously, we have a broader vision, but we just try to top each episode as we go,” he said.
Memorable Moments and Personal Highlights
For Sol Phenduka, reflecting on standout interviews was a first. Among his favourites were football legends Benni McCarthy and his childhood hero Brian Baloyi. “Interviewing Benni was amazing,” he shared, adding that while each interview had unique moments, these stood out for him.
MacG offered insight into his intense preparation process. “I literally become the person for 24 hours before the show. After spending so much time researching them, it feels like they become a part of you, and you a part of them,” he explained. Despite this deep connection, MacG said it’s impossible to pick a single favourite episode.
Challenges and Staying Grounded
Speaking about the challenges of maintaining their high standards, Phenduka acknowledged that the pressure to create memorable moments never truly fades. “We’re categorised as a comedy podcast, but that just came from how we naturally do things. The nerves are always there, but they push us to do better.”
MacG and Phenduka also reflected on their experience taking Podcast and Chill to Los Angeles for the BET Awards. Despite funding hurdles, the team self-financed the trip to showcase their work on a global stage.
MacG was inspired by the scale of the US entertainment industry. “Being in America and seeing how seriously they take entertainment made me appreciate and aspire to that level,” he said.
Phenduka added that the trip was a grounding experience. “It reminded us that despite being the biggest podcast in South Africa, there’s still a long way to go. It’s motivated us to aim higher.”
Looking Ahead
As Podcast and Chill continues to dominate South Africa’s podcasting scene, the trio remains focused on growth, quality, and authenticity. Their candid reflections and relentless drive promise to keep chillers tuning in for more.
