In a disappointing turn for South African marathon fans, Irvette Van Zyl, the record-holding champion and four-time Olympian, has withdrawn from the 2024 Soweto Marathon due to injury. Van Zyl, who had high hopes of claiming a fifth title and the R250,000 prize, has been sidelined after a taxing season, including her participation in the Olympic Marathon in Paris this past August.
Injury Takes a Toll on the Champion
Her husband, LJ Van Zyl, South Africa’s national record holder in the 400m hurdles, shared the difficult news during an interview with SABC Sport. “She’s at home resting, absolutely devastated that she won’t defend her title,” he said. “It was a tough stretch preparing for the Olympics, and she pushed through despite hamstring issues before and after the race.”
Following the Olympics, the couple had to adjust her training regimen to accommodate her injury. “We tried some cycling and light jogging, but her body clearly needed a break,” he noted. “She’s been on a relentless journey, competing in some of the hardest marathons.”
Transitioning Focus to Recovery and Future Races
With her withdrawal from the Soweto Marathon confirmed, Van Zyl is now focusing on a gradual recovery with a hopeful eye on the 2025 Two Oceans Marathon. As part of her healing process, LJ Van Zyl has planned swimming activities to help his wife relax and maintain her fitness without putting additional strain on her hamstring. “Swimming is ideal for her now,” he explained, adding that it provides a safe way to stay active while allowing her muscles the rest they need.
“You can’t overload every season. It’s just not sustainable, and running the brutal Soweto Marathon without full fitness would be unwise,” he added, underscoring the importance of making thoughtful decisions about participation. “If she’s not 100% ready, then she shouldn’t risk it. She’ll only go if she can compete at her best.”
Sponsors Stand by Van Zyl
Van Zyl’s sponsors, including Hollywood Athletics Club and Asics, are in full support of her decision. She held discussions with her sponsors before making her withdrawal public, ensuring they were informed about her status and recovery plans. “Hollywood and Asics are completely on board with her resting this year,” LJ Van Zyl confirmed. “They’re supportive of her taking the time needed to come back strong next year.”
Looking Ahead
While her absence will be felt at the Soweto Marathon, fans and sponsors alike are optimistic that Irvette Van Zyl will return to competition fully restored, ready to take on future challenges. For now, her focus is on healing, mental recovery, and preparing for the 2025 season. Despite the setback, her unwavering dedication and disciplined approach to recovery underscore the resilience that has defined her illustrious career.
