Susan Lorincz, a 60-year-old Ocala resident, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the fatal shooting of her Black neighbor, Ajike “AJ” Owens, a 35-year-old mother of four. The incident, which occurred on June 2, 2023, in Florida, sparked national outrage, shedding light on issues of racial tension and gun violence.
Owens was killed after confronting Lorincz about her mistreatment of Owens’ children, who had been playing near Lorincz’s home. According to reports, Lorincz shot Owens from inside her home, with the bullet passing through the front door and striking Owens in the chest. Owens was unarmed at the time.
Claims of Self-Defense Rejected
During the trial, Lorincz claimed self-defense, citing Florida’s controversial ‘Stand Your Ground’ law. However, the all-white jury did not find her argument credible. Circuit Judge Robert Hodges condemned Lorincz’s actions, emphasizing that she had ample opportunity to contact authorities instead of resorting to violence.
“The shooting was totally unnecessary,” Judge Hodges stated, adding, “It was based more on anger than fear.” The jury deliberated for only 30 minutes before delivering a guilty verdict. State sentencing guidelines suggested a range of 11.5 to 30 years, and Owens’ family, along with the prosecution, pushed for the maximum sentence.
The Impact of the ‘Stand Your Ground’ Law
Lorincz’s defense leaned heavily on Florida’s ‘Stand Your Ground’ law, which allows individuals to use lethal force if they believe their life is in imminent danger. This law has been widely criticized, particularly after its controversial use in the 2013 acquittal of George Zimmerman in the Trayvon Martin case. Despite invoking the law, Lorincz’s claim did not sway the jury.
Owens’ Family Seeks Justice
Following the sentencing, Owens’ mother, Pamela Dias, expressed the family’s relief that justice had been served, though it could never fully heal their loss. “Ajike was a beloved mother, daughter, and friend whose life was tragically cut short,” Dias said. She also thanked the public for their support throughout the trial.
This case has reignited debates over racial bias in the justice system and the application of self-defense laws. For Owens’ family and community, the 25-year sentence represents a measure of justice in a case that underscores the dangers of unchecked anger and the lasting impact of systemic inequalities.
