Zack Snyder, long associated with the DC Extended Universe, is making a major shift away from big-budget, visual-effects-heavy films with his upcoming project The Last Photograph.
The filmmaker, known for directing and producing several DC installments, has unveiled the first look at the drama, which he has described as a smaller and more personal film. According to Discussing Film, The Last Photograph follows a man searching for his missing niece and nephew after their parents are murdered. His only lead is a photographer who witnessed the killers.
Early images suggest Snyder has stepped back from his signature style of explosive visuals in favour of character-driven storytelling. The film’s soundtrack is reportedly composed by longtime collaborator Hans Zimmer.
The project reunites Snyder with actors Stuart Martin and Fra Fee, both of whom appeared in his Rebel Moon films as Den and Balisarius. Martin has worked with Snyder on multiple projects. Snyder also shared the first-look images on his Instagram account.
Production began in late August, with filming taking place in Colombia, Iceland, and the United States. Snyder is producing alongside his wife and creative partner Deborah Snyder, Wesley Coller under their Stone Quarry banner, and Gianni Nunnari of Hollywood Gang Productions.
The film was initially described as a war drama, with an early logline focusing on an ex-DEA operative searching the South American mountains for his missing relatives with the help of a war photographer. However, Snyder previously hinted at wanting to make a film without visual effects.
In July 2024, Snyder said he wanted to work on a “small movie” without relying on CGI before returning to larger productions. The tone and description of The Last Photograph appear to align with that vision.
While Snyder is best known for comic book adaptations, his career also includes Dawn of the Dead, 300, Watchmen, Sucker Punch, Army of the Dead, the animated series Twilight of the Gods, and Rebel Moon.
The Last Photograph does not yet have a release date.
