Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused the West of pushing Moscow to its “red lines,” escalating tensions with threats to lift restrictions on missile deployments. In a televised meeting with defence officials on Monday, Putin expressed concern over the potential deployment of US short and medium-range missiles and hinted at retaliatory actions.
A Dire Warning
Putin stated that Russia might abandon its self-imposed limits on missile deployments if the United States proceeds with deploying its own. “We are closely monitoring developments, and if necessary, we will respond decisively,” he said.
Russia’s nuclear arsenal, Putin reiterated, is intended for deterrence. However, his latest rhetoric underscores a willingness to push boundaries amid increasing hostilities with Ukraine and the West.
Hypersonic Missile Strikes
The conflict took a severe turn last month when Russia deployed its hypersonic, nuclear-capable missile, Oreshnik, against Ukraine. The missile struck Dnipro, triggering devastating explosions less than 24 hours after Ukrainian forces reportedly attacked Russia’s Kursk region with British-supplied Storm Shadow missiles.
Ukrainian investigators found remnants of the missile, which reportedly reached speeds of over 12,875 km/h (8,000 mph). This marked the first time such a weapon had been documented on Ukrainian soil.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the use of Oreshnik, calling it a “severe escalation” and urging international allies to respond swiftly.
Territorial Gains and Strategic Initiatives
Putin also claimed that Russian forces have the upper hand across the Ukrainian front line. In 2023 alone, Russian troops reportedly captured 189 settlements and advanced over 4,500 square kilometres.
“Russian troops are firmly holding the strategic initiative along the entire line of contact,” Putin said.
Defence Minister Andrei Belousov echoed these remarks, noting that Russian forces are gaining an estimated 30 square kilometres daily. He highlighted that Ukraine’s control over key regions such as Lugansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia is rapidly diminishing.
A Year of Escalation
Putin described 2023 as a “landmark year” in Russia’s controversial “special military operation.” His comments underline Moscow’s determination to solidify territorial claims despite international condemnation.
The situation remains volatile, with Russia’s use of advanced weaponry and its rhetoric against Western powers adding fuel to the ongoing crisis. For Ukraine, the struggle to defend its sovereignty intensifies as allies face mounting pressure to intervene more decisively.
