Viola Davis is trading in red carpets for presidential power—and a loaded weapon. In the highly anticipated action-thriller G20, the Oscar-winning actress takes on the role of President Taylor Sutton, a fearless leader who finds herself in the middle of an international crisis.
Set to premiere on April 10 on Prime Video, G20 follows Sutton as she arrives in Cape Town, South Africa, expecting a routine G20 world summit. However, diplomacy quickly turns into disaster when a group of terrorists infiltrate the event, taking global leaders hostage as part of a sinister deepfake conspiracy.
“They don’t just want control,” Sutton warns in the film’s action-packed trailer, “they want the truth to disappear.”
A President Under Fire
The stakes skyrocket when Sutton’s husband and children go missing, forcing her to abandon protocol and fight back. Instead of waiting for reinforcements, she takes up arms to protect her fellow leaders—and stop the criminals from reshaping the world through deepfake deception.
Anthony Starr (The Boys) plays the film’s main antagonist, Rutledge, the mastermind behind the attack. In the trailer, he smugly declares, “Now we control the narrative,” hinting at the group’s ability to manipulate reality using cutting-edge technology.
Also starring in the film are Anthony Anderson, Marsai Martin, and Jason Isaacs, rounding out a stellar cast. The movie is directed by Patricia Riggen, known for her work on The 33 and Miracles from Heaven.
A Story That Mirrors Reality?
While G20 is a fictional thriller, its themes of political instability, cyber warfare, and deepfake manipulation feel eerily relevant. The movie comes just months after the 2024 U.S. presidential election, in which former Vice President Kamala Harris was a prominent figure—drawing inevitable comparisons to Davis’s role as a history-making Black female president.
At the Red Sea Film Festival, Davis addressed the film’s timely themes, emphasizing that President Sutton is a “completely fictitious character” but acknowledging the parallels.
“It was the sort of thing you’d imagine as a kid, just playing the most heroic character you could possibly play,” Davis told Variety. “Danielle Sutton was a war hero, won the election on a liberal ticket—it just so happens that it mirrored a lot of what was happening in American politics at the time. But really, it’s just meant to be a fun movie.”
Viola Davis: The Ultimate Powerhouse
Davis, an EGOT winner (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony), has long been known for her commanding on-screen presence. Whether in historical dramas like The Woman King or intense thrillers like Widows, she brings unmatched intensity to every role.
Last month, she was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 82nd Annual Golden Globes, recognizing her incredible contributions to film and television.
Now, in G20, she takes on one of her most action-packed roles yet—proving once again why she’s one of Hollywood’s most formidable talents.
