Patrice Motsepe, the South African business tycoon and current president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has officially announced his bid for a second term in office. CAF confirmed on Friday that Motsepe has agreed to run in the presidential elections slated for March 2025. The announcement puts an end to months of speculation about his future with CAF, as he had previously avoided confirming his intentions.
CAF’s statement noted that Motsepe’s decision to run for a second term came in response to requests from several member association presidents, zonal union leaders, and other prominent figures in African football. “Following requests from numerous CAF member association presidents, zonal union presidents, and key stakeholders, Motsepe has finally agreed to stand as a candidate at the CAF presidential elections scheduled for March 2025,” the statement said.
Motsepe’s first term, which began in 2021, saw him taking charge of an organisation faced with financial and organisational challenges. He has worked on strengthening African football’s appeal, improving governance, and establishing partnerships that have injected much-needed funds into the organisation.
Potential Challenge from Samuel Eto’o
While Motsepe’s leadership has garnered support across the continent, there is a possibility that he could face a significant challenge from Cameroonian football legend Samuel Eto’o. Currently, Eto’o serves as the president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) and has expressed interest in playing a larger role in African football governance. His potential candidacy could create a high-stakes race, as Eto’o is widely respected and holds substantial influence within the football community.
Last month, Motsepe visited Kenya to assess the country’s preparations for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). During this visit, he sidestepped questions about a second term, fuelling speculation about his intentions. His confirmation now brings clarity to the future of CAF leadership, and his potential rivalry with Eto’o could shape the direction of African football.
Key Goals for Motsepe’s Second Term
If re-elected, Motsepe will likely continue focusing on several key goals for CAF and African football development. His priorities have included:
- Financial Stability: Working to improve CAF’s financial position through sponsorships and partnerships.
- Infrastructure Development: Pushing for better football facilities across Africa to improve the quality of competitions and training facilities.
- Expanded Competitions: Strengthening CAF’s existing tournaments and exploring ways to improve Africa’s standing in global football.
With the elections on the horizon, Motsepe’s decision has set the stage for an eventful race in March 2025. African football enthusiasts and stakeholders alike will closely follow the campaign as CAF seeks a leader to steer the future of African football.
