.The North-West University (NWU) has officially honoured Springbok captain Siya Kolisi by renaming a student residence in his name. The newly inaugurated Siya Kolisi Residence, formerly known as Dennedorp Residence, was unveiled at NWU’s Potchefstroom campus on February 24, 2025. This residence will primarily serve students affiliated with the NWU Rugby Institute.
Alongside this, the university also introduced the Invictus Residence, a multi-sport facility, in a ceremony attended by Kolisi and Springbok head coach Dr. Rassie Erasmus. Together, the two residences will accommodate up to 204 students.
Celebrating Leadership and Legacy
NWU principal and vice-chancellor, Prof. Bismark Tyobeka, emphasized that Kolisi is more than just a sporting icon, describing him as a leader and a beacon of resilience.
“At the NWU, we don’t just see Siya Kolisi as a sports icon. We see him as a leader, a trailblazer, and a living testimony to what can be achieved through courage and determination. Naming this residence in his honour is not just about celebrating his achievements on the field, but also recognising the values he represents: hard work, humility, and the ability to unite a nation.”
Siya Kolisi’s Emotional Response
Kolisi, visibly moved by the recognition, expressed his deep gratitude for the honour.
“No one ever dreams to have moments like this, to have a building named after them. I am so honoured and grateful for this opportunity. I would like to thank everyone who has been a part of my journey. I am standing on the shoulders of many people who helped me be where I am today.”
The rugby captain took the opportunity to encourage students to make the most of their education and the opportunities presented to them.
“I know that you all are on a journey and that you want to become rugby players. But remember that you are more than that. You have an opportunity to study, and I wish that I used that opportunity. I didn’t. Rugby is not always going to work for everybody, so make use of all your opportunities.”

Kolisi also shared a personal lesson on perseverance:
“If you fail, you have to get up and don’t stay down. You have to keep on getting up. The more you get up, the more you learn. Just be good people. I haven’t always been the best example, but I am learning every day. Be kind to one another. Be there for one another. Don’t try to be the cool kid. I’ve done that, it is not awesome. Just be kind and be a good human being, because you never know where life can take you.”
Rassie Erasmus on NWU’s Progressive Vision
Springbok coach Dr. Rassie Erasmus, who was awarded an honorary doctorate from NWU in 2024, also spoke at the ceremony. He commended the university for its forward-thinking approach and commitment to fostering both academic and sporting excellence.
“It’s a privilege to be part of a university that thinks outside the box. I have no doubt that both the Siya Kolisi and Invictus residences will go from strength to strength.”
A Milestone for NWU and South African Sport
The unveiling of these residences is a significant step in NWU’s ongoing mission to bridge academics and sports, fostering well-rounded individuals who can excel both on and off the field. It also underscores Kolisi’s legacy as an inspiration to young South Africans, not only as a rugby star but as a leader who champions perseverance, education, and unity.
With these new facilities, NWU aims to continue producing future sports stars while encouraging students to embrace all opportunities available to them.
