Nine schoolchildren were injured after their scholar transport vehicle crashed into a tree near Sarnia Primary School in Pinetown, west of Durban.
According to Advanced Life Support (ALS) Paramedics, the incident involved a single vehicle transporting nine learners who were on their way home when the driver reportedly lost control.
Emergency services respond
ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said all nine children were treated at the scene.
“It’s believed that a single vehicle carrying nine school children on their way home somehow lost control and collided with a tree. Nine of the children have been attended by ALS Paramedics with injuries ranging from minor to moderate,” Jamieson said.
He added that once the injured children were stabilised, they were transported to various hospitals for further medical care.
Scene described as chaotic
Jamieson described the scene as chaotic, with multiple ambulances in attendance and distressed parents rushing to the area after learning of the crash.
Emergency services worked to manage the situation and ensure the injured learners received prompt treatment.
Investigation expected
At the time of reporting, authorities had not released further details regarding the cause of the crash. An investigation is expected to determine what led to the vehicle losing control.
