In a landmark decision, President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially recognised Princess Masalanabo Modjadji VII as the Queen of the Balobedu Royal Nation, marking the end of a protracted legal battle that divided the royal family. This long-awaited recognition signals a new chapter for the Balobedu people and sets the stage for her upcoming coronation in March 2025.
The official acknowledgment of Queen Masalanabo, also known as the Rain Queen, comes after years of family disputes, with her siblings challenging her claim to the throne. However, with the recognition, the queen’s succession is now secure, and the focus turns to the next steps in the Balobedu nation’s future.
A Historic Milestone for the Balobedu Nation
The recognition of Queen Masalanabo is a pivotal moment in the history of the Balobedu Royal Nation, ensuring the continuation of the Modjadji dynasty. The Queen’s chief counselor, Dr. Mathole Motshekga, expressed the significance of this moment, noting that it reaffirms the royal family’s enduring legacy of unity and leadership.
“This is a great day for the Balobedu people. The Queen’s recognition celebrates not only her as a leader but also the Modjadji dynasty, which has always stood as a symbol of strength and cultural preservation,” said Motshekga. He also emphasized Queen Masalanabo’s commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of the Balobedu Royal Nation and promoting unity across the various ethnic groups, including the Vha-Venda, Bapedi, and Ba-Tsonga.
Her ascension follows the passing of her mother, Queen Makobo Modjadji VI, in 2005. At the time of her mother’s death, Queen Masalanabo was a minor, and her uncle, Prince Mpapatla Modjadji, served as regent until she reached adulthood in January 2023. This marked the official end of the regency and paved the way for her recognition as the rightful Queen.
Focus on Development and Cultural Heritage
Queen Masalanabo’s focus will be on driving key initiatives aimed at boosting the socio-economic development of her people. These will include efforts to promote agriculture, mining, cultural tourism, and the empowerment of women, youth, children, and people with disabilities. Her dedication to these causes will complement the South African government’s broader efforts to create a prosperous and inclusive society.
Motshekga further revealed that the Queen’s Council is in the process of being established, with preparations for her coronation already underway. The exact date for the coronation will be confirmed after coordinating schedules with the Office of the President, the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), and the Premier of Limpopo.
A Contentious Battle Within the Royal Family
Despite the official recognition, the path to the throne has not been smooth. The Queen’s elder brother, Prince Lekukela Modjadji, had been promoted as the successor during a controversial traditional ceremony in October 2022. This threatened to overturn centuries of female leadership in the Balobedu Royal Nation.
The Modjadji Royal Council, which is divided, has expressed strong objections to President Ramaphosa’s recognition of Princess Masalanabo as the next Queen. Ronny Moroatshehla, a spokesperson for the council, voiced concerns over the lack of consultation with the royal family, calling the decision a mistake that would be challenged in court.
“We are deeply shocked by this recognition. It was made without our consultation, and we believe that someone has overstepped their authority. We are prepared to take this matter to court,” Moroatshehla told SABC.
Provincial Support for the New Queen
While the royal family remains divided, the provincial government has welcomed the decision. Limpopo Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba expressed her support for Queen Masalanabo, praising the recognition as a step towards preserving the legacy of the Rain Queen tradition.
“We are pleased to see this recognition, which brings stability and continuity to the Balobedu nation. Queen Masalanabo Modjadji VII will undoubtedly lead with strength and wisdom, continuing the legacy of the Modjadji dynasty,” Ramathuba said.
Looking Ahead to the Coronation
The recognition of Queen Masalanabo Modjadji VII marks the beginning of an exciting new era for the Balobedu Royal Nation. As preparations for her coronation gain momentum, the people of Balobedu and South Africa are preparing to celebrate this momentous occasion. It is a testament to her leadership, vision, and unwavering commitment to the Balobedu people.
