A man from Mpumalanga, Mlungisi Maseko, has captured the hearts of South Africans by using his R1.3 million Road Accident Fund (RAF) payout to improve his community, rather than spending it on luxury items.
Maseko, 42, from Mooiplaas village in the Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality, suffered injuries in a car accident in 2018. When he finally received his compensation, he noticed how over 100 households in his village had been struggling without clean water for 15 years. Residents were forced to travel five kilometres to access drinkable water due to a lack of service delivery.
Instead of keeping the money for himself, Maseko used his payout to install water pipes, tanks, and essential infrastructure, bringing a reliable water supply to his community. His selfless act has earned him widespread respect, especially in light of the municipality’s failure to address the issue for years.
Farming for a Cause
Maseko, who makes a living through farming, has also given part of his land to community members, allowing them to farm and earn an income. His dedication to helping others has not only improved lives but also inspired many across the country.
Community Hero
Residents have hailed Maseko as a local hero, with many calling for his story to be recognised on a larger scale. His selflessness stands as a shining example of how individual efforts can uplift entire communities in the face of government shortcomings.
