Lanseria International Airport has officially launched its groundbreaking automated boarding gate system, “Tap and Fly,” marking a major milestone for domestic travel in South Africa. The system was introduced just in time for the festive season and positions Lanseria as a frontrunner in smart airport innovation. While embracing advanced technology, the airport remains committed to the warm, personalised service for which it is known.
A First for Domestic Travel in South Africa
The “Tap and Fly” system is the first of its kind for domestic travellers in South Africa. The CEO of Lanseria International Airport, Rampa Rammopo, hailed the launch as a key step in the airport’s vision to become Africa’s leading SMART airport. “This milestone aligns with our commitment to providing passengers with exceptional convenience, SMART value-adding processes, and a seamless travel experience,” said Rammopo. He also noted that the launch coincides with Lanseria’s 50th anniversary, making the achievement even more significant.
Phase One of a Broader SMART Airport Strategy
The automated boarding gates represent the first phase of Lanseria’s long-term SMART airport strategy. Rammopo revealed that future enhancements will include biometric technology for secure international travel and self-service bag-drop systems to further streamline passenger processing. “Tap and Fly is just the beginning,” he stated.
Enhancing Efficiency Without Compromising Service
Implemented in partnership with FlySafair, the “Tap and Fly” gates aim to reduce boarding times while allowing Lanseria’s staff to focus on delivering personalised customer service. Passengers will still check in their luggage and complete standard ID verification with staff before using the automated gates. They can then scan their boarding passes or QR codes to gain access to the boarding area, significantly reducing wait times before security checks.
Importantly, Rammopo emphasised that the new system will not lead to job losses. Instead, it will enhance the quality of service as staff remain available to address customer queries and concerns.
Communication and Public Engagement
To ensure a smooth transition, Lanseria has rolled out comprehensive information on its website and in-terminal screens. Travellers can learn how the gates work, their benefits, and how they contribute to a smoother travel experience. The system has undergone successful testing, and airport officials are confident in its readiness for public use.
Future Enhancements: Biometric Technology and Beyond
Lanseria’s SMART strategy will soon incorporate biometric authentication to enhance security and efficiency. The airport also plans to install automated security gates for staff, crew, and permit holders, replacing manual ID verification with digital permits and boarding passes.
“As South Africa’s leading privately-owned airport, we are proud to pioneer this technology,” Rammopo said. “We look forward to sharing this seamless ‘Tap and Fly’ experience with our customers, ensuring faster boarding times and the personalised service that sets us apart.”
