Kerry Washington, the award-winning actress known for her role in Scandal, was honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday, December 2. The event was a heartfelt celebration, attended by family, close friends, and Hollywood icons, ahead of her upcoming film, The Six Triple Eight, which debuts in theatres on December 6 and hits Netflix on December 20.
The ceremony, held post-Thanksgiving, featured an array of notable guests, including her parents, Earl and Valarie Washington, her husband, Nnamdi Asomugha, and renowned figures like Shonda Rhimes and Tyler Perry, who directs Washington’s war drama. Cast members from The Six Triple Eight, such as Kylie Jefferson and Sarah Jeffery, also joined to honour her. The film tells the story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, a World War II unit made up entirely of Black women, shining a spotlight on a remarkable but often overlooked chapter in history.
A Message of Hope and Resilience
In an interview with Extra TV during the ceremony, Washington shared a reflective message to her younger self:
“Enjoy the journey and trust that everything’s going to be okay in the end,” she said, encouraging patience and gratitude. “Take a deep breath and be grateful for where you are in each moment.”
Her speech also paid tribute to her Bronx upbringing. She recounted a story about her uncle, who once posed next to a Walk of Fame star bearing the surname “Moss,” obscuring the first name to make it seem like it was his. This playful moment, she recalled, exemplified the power of dreams:
“He made it all the way from Simpson Street to Hollywood because, just like his parents, he dared to dream,” Washington said, crediting her parents for instilling in her the belief that dreams are achievable. “Mom, Dad, can you believe it? An actual star. You made a wish, and it came true.”
A Shining Career of Three Decades
Washington’s Hollywood star is the culmination of a 30-year career marked by standout roles in films such as Ray, For Colored Girls, and Django Unchained, as well as TV shows like Little Fires Everywhere and Unprisoned. Her portrayal of Olivia Pope in Scandal cemented her status as a trailblazer in television.
Looking ahead, Washington is set to star in the Knives Out sequel, Wake Up Dead Man, and the action-thriller Shadow Force, ensuring that her star will continue to shine brightly in the galaxy of Hollywood’s finest.
