A 35-year-old labour law attorney, Chinette Gallichan, was shot and killed outside the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) offices in the Johannesburg CBD on Monday morning.
The incident occurred shortly after 09:00 at the corner of Fox and Joubert streets, as Gallichan arrived for a scheduled matter.
Shooting in Broad Daylight
Eyewitnesses reported that Gallichan had just exited her vehicle when a male suspect approached her and opened fire at close range.
The attacker fled the scene on foot before escaping in a waiting vehicle, prompting a swift response from emergency services and law enforcement.
Initial reports suggest that none of the victim’s belongings were taken, leading investigators to suspect that the killing may have been targeted.
Legal Professional Attacked While on Duty
At the time of her death, Gallichan was employed in the labour litigation department of Sibanye-Stillwater.
She had reportedly been representing a mining company in a dispute involving retrenched workers seeking compensation.
Colleagues described her as a dedicated legal professional who regularly appeared at the CCMA, handling matters related to unfair dismissals and unpaid wages.
Academic and Professional Background
Gallichan obtained her LLB degree from the University of South Africa (UNISA) and later completed a postgraduate diploma in labour law with distinction from the University of Johannesburg.
Her work in labour law positioned her at the centre of disputes between employers and employees, a field often marked by high tensions.
Tributes From the Athletics Community
Beyond her legal career, Gallichan was an active member of the running community.
She and her husband were part of the Run Zone Athletics Club in Northcliff and regularly participated in road races.
In 2023, she completed the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, finishing in a time of 4:18:57.
Her death has shocked both the legal fraternity and athletics circles, where she was regarded as a committed and familiar figure.
Police Investigate Motive
Police have launched a murder investigation, with early indications pointing to a possible targeted hit.
Authorities have not yet confirmed a motive, and no arrests have been made at this stage.
The killing adds to ongoing concerns about violent crime in major urban centres, particularly incidents occurring in broad daylight.
Growing Safety Concerns
The shooting outside a key public institution like the CCMA has raised alarm about safety in the Johannesburg CBD, especially for professionals working in high-stakes legal environments.
As investigations continue, authorities are expected to review security measures in the area while pursuing leads on the suspect and possible accomplices.
For now, the focus remains on uncovering the motive behind the killing and bringing those responsible to justice.
