With over 200 plants flourishing in his Brooklyn apartment, Christopher Griffin, lovingly known as the Plant Kween, has found a way to navigate anxiety, build peace, and inspire others. His journey, rooted in family tradition and self-discovery, has culminated in his book You Grow, Gurl!, a heartfelt guide to healing through plants.
A Legacy of Growth
Griffin’s love for plants has deep familial roots. His grandmother, who grew up on a farm in Clayton, Georgia, carried her appreciation for the land into her life in Philadelphia, where she raised her family as a single mother. Her garden became a source of joy and connection, passing down the love for nurturing plants to Griffin.
From an early age, Griffin absorbed his grandmother’s wisdom, but it wasn’t until 2015 that he bought his first plant. Living in a fast-paced, chaotic world, he sought solace in greenery. That single plant transformed into a vibrant collection, now filling every corner of his Brooklyn apartment.
Finding Peace in Greenery
For Griffin, tending to plants is more than a hobby—it’s a lifeline. He credits plant care with giving him a sense of accountability and stability.
“They rely on me to care for them, which provides control and responsibility,” Griffin explained. “As someone who navigates anxiety, those are invaluable.”
His lush sanctuary also offers refuge from the intensity of New York City. “To wake up surrounded by nature is calming. There’s research showing plants reduce stress and help focus,” he said.
Griffin sees plant care as a metaphor for resilience and growth. “There are no failures in gardening, only lessons,” he reflected. “Even when a beloved plant dies, the experience teaches me to do better next time. Gardening is a profound reminder to nourish ourselves, seek light, and grow, even through challenges.”
A Life Rooted in Joy
Griffin’s dedication to cultivating joy extends beyond gardening. His family, though small and familiar with loss, remains his foundation. He also cherishes a chosen family of close friends who nurture his spirit.
Solo travel, biking, and finding new ways to celebrate life are among his joys. “I’m a party all on my own,” Griffin said. “Learning to love my own company has been an important part of my journey.”
Sharing the Gift of Growth
In the summer of 2020, Griffin channeled his passion for plants into a book. Published by HarperCollins, You Grow, Gurl!: Plant Kween’s Guide to Growing Your Garden is a resource filled with stories, meditations, playlists, and advice for plant parents.
Writing the book during the COVID-19 pandemic brought focus and fulfillment to Griffin’s days. “It was a beautiful process. The book is full of memories—about my grandmother, fellow plant parents, and more. It’s also a guide to healing, especially for Black people.”
Inspiring Others
Griffin’s work is a reminder of the power of nature and community. Through his Instagram @PlantKween and his book, he continues to inspire others to find joy in plants and in themselves. His journey demonstrates that growth—like gardening—requires patience, care, and the willingness to embrace life’s lessons.
