Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Brian Abbas Amidu has been arrested in Zimbabwe following a massive drug bust along the Kwekwe–Kadoma Highway, local authorities confirmed this week.
The 35-year-old footballer, who previously played for Kaizer Chiefs, Black Leopards, and CAPS United, was reportedly found in possession of 75 tightly packed black plastic bags filled with dagga (marijuana). Police said Amidu was taken into custody and is currently awaiting a bail hearing after being remanded in custody.
Drug Trafficking Arrest
According to reports from IOL and Zimbabwean police sources, Amidu was intercepted by law enforcement officers in Kwekwe during a routine highway patrol. A subsequent search of his vehicle allegedly uncovered the illegal consignment, leading to his arrest on drug trafficking charges.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the estimated street value of the seized substances.
Football Career in Review
Amidu joined Kaizer Chiefs in 2012 from Black Mambas FC, signing a three-and-a-half-year deal with the Soweto giants. However, his time at Naturena was short-lived — lasting only three months before he moved to Black Leopards FC, where he spent three seasons.
After leaving South Africa, Amidu went on to play for several clubs across Africa and the Middle East, before officially retiring from professional football in 2020. He also represented the Zimbabwean national team, earning seven international caps during his career.
Confusion Over His Age
Following his arrest, questions have surfaced regarding Amidu’s age and identity. While police records list him as 29 years old, historical data suggests otherwise — given that Amidu was 21 years old when he signed for Kaizer Chiefs in 2012, which would make him 34 or 35 today.
Back in 2012, Kaizer Chiefs confirmed his signing, stating:
“Kaizer Chiefs have signed Black Mambas striker Brian Abbas Amidu on a three-and-a-half-year deal. The 21-year-old has already represented Zimbabwe at U-23 level.”
The discrepancy has sparked speculation about record-keeping and identity verification within Zimbabwean football circles.
Awaiting Court Outcome
Amidu remains in custody in Kwekwe, where authorities have said the case is still under investigation. He is expected to appear in court later this month for a formal bail hearing.
If convicted, he could face severe penalties under Zimbabwe’s strict drug trafficking laws, which carry sentences of up to 20 years in prison.
