In a recent interview, legendary actor Denzel Washington disclosed an intriguing detail about his role in the highly anticipated Gladiator II. He revealed that he shared an intense same-sex kiss with a male co-star during filming, but the scene was ultimately cut from the movie.
“The Kiss of Death”
Washington, who stars as Macrinus in Ridley Scott’s epic sequel, opened up to Gayety about the bold moment.
“I actually kissed a man in the film, but they took it out,” Washington shared. “I think they got chicken.”
He went on to describe the moment as fitting the tone of the story. “I kissed a guy full on the lips, and I guess they weren’t ready for that yet. I killed him about five minutes later. It’s Gladiator. It’s the kiss of death.”
While the scene didn’t make it to the final cut, Washington’s candor about his role reflects his fearless approach to acting.
Collaborating with the Best
Washington, a two-time Academy Award winner, also spoke about his future in filmmaking. He revealed that director Ryan Coogler, known for his work on Black Panther, is currently writing a role for him in an upcoming Marvel film.
“For me, it’s about the filmmakers. Especially at this point in my career, I am only interested in working with the best,” Washington said. “I don’t know how many more films I’m going to make. It’s probably not that many. I want to do things I haven’t done.”
This Marvel project may mark one of Washington’s final on-screen appearances, hinting at the actor’s plans to slowly step back from the industry.
Gladiator II: A Worthy Sequel
Gladiator II, directed by Ridley Scott, is set to hit theaters on November 22. The epic drama promises to bring the same level of intensity, action, and grandeur as its predecessor, which captivated audiences over two decades ago. Fans are eagerly awaiting to see how Washington’s character fits into the narrative and whether any daring moments—like the one he described—will find their way back into the franchise.
