The Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) has set the stage for an electrifying showdown as it announced the Top 5 nominees for the 31st South African Music Awards (SAMA31). Three powerhouse acts — Black Motion, Kelvin Momo, and Thandiswa Mazwai — have emerged as joint front-runners, each securing five nominations, marking one of the most competitive editions in recent memory.
Following closely behind, Sjava earned three nominations, while ZamaJobe and Blxckie each landed two, solidifying a diverse and genre-spanning field.
A Battle of Eras and Sounds
According to Unati Gwija, SAMA Spokesperson, the 2025 nominees reflect a new creative frontier where artistry and innovation collide across genres.
“Our Top 5 categories reflect a new era where talent, artistry, and resilience converge,” said Gwija. “These artists represent a layered and competitive field where excellence is not confined to one sound or one era, but spread across genres and platforms — setting the stage for one of the most dynamic editions of the SAMAs in recent history.”
The announcement revealed nominees in the Top 5 headline categories:
- Album of the Year
- Duo or Group of the Year
- Female Artist of the Year
- Male Artist of the Year
- Newcomer of the Year
These categories officially ignite the countdown to the SAMA31 main event — South Africa’s most celebrated music night.
A Celebration of Excellence and Diversity
“The Top 5 announcement is more than a roll-call of nominees,” Gwija continued. “It’s the ignition point for the SAMA countdown — a moment that builds hype, sharpens rivalries, and rallies fans behind their favourites as we move toward the ceremony.”
Supported by a coalition of cultural and industry partners — including the Motsepe Foundation, Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, SAMPRA, SAMRO, YouTube, CAPASSO, and SABC as the official media partner — the SAMAs continue to serve as the gold standard of South African music.
They remain instrumental in amplifying diverse voices, advancing inclusivity across genres, and strengthening the nation’s thriving creative economy.
Acknowledging the Adjudicators
Gwija extended gratitude to the SAMA judging panel for their tireless dedication in maintaining the credibility and integrity of the awards process.
“On behalf of RiSA and the SAMA office, we extend heartfelt thanks to the judges, whose tireless listening and adjudication honour the integrity of this process. Their work ensures the Top 5 trailblazers are celebrated with the respect they deserve.”
As anticipation builds, all eyes now turn toward the SAMA31 ceremony, where the nation’s top talent will go head-to-head — not just for trophies, but for a place in South Africa’s music legacy.
