Zimbabwe is facing growing unrest as a faction of war veterans openly demands the resignation of President Emmerson Mnangagwa. They accuse him of plotting to extend his rule beyond constitutional limits, a move they say threatens democracy.
War veteran leader Blessed Geza, also known as ‘Bombshell,’ has taken a bold stance, calling for mass action and a possible nationwide shutdown to push Mnangagwa out of office.
Call for Mass Protests
In a live-streamed address, Geza urged Zimbabweans to prepare for action:
“We are going to call for action soon. Stock up in preparation for a national shutdown as we march towards a free Zimbabwe.”
He further warned Mnangagwa directly:
“We have called upon you to step down peacefully and immediately, but you have ignored us. The people will force you to step down using their constitutional rights.”
The Role of War Veterans in Zimbabwean Politics
War veterans have historically been a powerful force in Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu PF party, often used to suppress opposition. Under Robert Mugabe’s rule, they played a key role in maintaining his iron grip on power.
However, in recent years, divisions have emerged, with some veterans now feeling betrayed by the current leadership. This latest rebellion deepens the fractures within Zimbabwe’s political landscape.
Government Crackdown & Possible Arrest
Following his remarks, Geza is reportedly facing arrest. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have issued a warrant for his capture, citing multiple charges, including:
- Inciting public violence
- Undermining the President’s authority
- Theft
Authorities warned that anyone aiding Geza in evading arrest will also be prosecuted.
What Happens Next?
With opposition mounting, Zimbabwe remains on edge. If the war veterans follow through with their national shutdown threat, the country could face widespread protests and instability in the coming weeks.
Mnangagwa’s administration has yet to respond directly to the war veterans’ demands, but a government crackdown on dissent appears imminent.
