In a high-profile bust, Zimbabwean national Joachim Chivayo, brother of controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo, was arrested alongside South African citizen Ayanda Brian Gungwa for the unlawful possession of six bars of unwrought gold valued at R15 million. The arrests were made by the Hawks, South Africa’s elite Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, during a sting operation in Brakpan, Johannesburg.
Hawks Foil Illegal Gold Deal
Captain Lloyd Ramovha, spokesperson for the Hawks in Gauteng, described the operation as a significant step in the fight against the illegal trade in precious metals. The arrests took place on Tuesday at approximately 1:15 pm, following what Ramovha called a “meticulously planned operation.”
“The Gauteng Hawks’ serious organised crime investigation team, in collaboration with their head office counterparts, achieved a significant breakthrough in their fight against illegal precious metal trading by arresting the two suspects,” said Ramovha.

The two men were reportedly in the process of trying to sell the gold bars when the Hawks intervened. Their court appearance marked the beginning of what is likely to be a high-profile legal battle.
Unlawful Possession of Gold
The six bars of unwrought gold were allegedly being sold without the necessary legal documentation, raising questions about the source of the precious metals. Authorities are investigating the origins of the gold and any potential links to larger smuggling operations in the region.
The unlawful trade in precious metals is a growing concern in South Africa, with gold smuggling operations increasingly being targeted by law enforcement. This latest bust highlights the ongoing efforts by the Hawks to clamp down on such criminal activities.
Connection to Wicknell Chivayo
Joachim Chivayo’s arrest will undoubtedly draw attention due to his connection to his brother Wicknell Chivayo, a well-known figure in Zimbabwean business and politics, who has been embroiled in various controversies over the years. While there is no indication that Wicknell is directly involved in this case, the family connection adds a layer of intrigue to the unfolding investigation.
Legal Proceedings and Further Investigation
The suspects have appeared in court, and the case is now under judicial review. Authorities are expected to intensify their investigation to determine whether the pair are part of a larger criminal network. The Hawks have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on illegal gold trading, which poses a threat to South Africa’s economy and mining sector.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against organised crime in the region and the efforts of law enforcement to disrupt illicit operations.
