West Coast Councillor Jan Koopman Switches from ANC to DA

In a surprising move, Jan Koopman, a former ANC councillor in the Matzikama Local Municipality, has joined the DA. The ANC claims his departure is driven by “personal interests” and “financial guarantees.” Koopman resigned from his role on Thursday, citing alignment with the DA’s goals for Matzikama and his personal values.

DA provincial leader Tertuis Simmers praised Koopman’s decision, stating that his resignation from the ANC reflects a desire to avoid the party’s obstruction of progress in the municipality. Koopman is no longer willing to participate in efforts that hinder Matzikama’s growth, Simmers explained. The DA, which has led the municipality through a coalition for two years, sees Koopman as a “pioneer” for his community.

Simmers, alongside constituency head Thomas Walters, highlighted the municipality’s achievements under DA leadership. According to them, the DA-led coalition has implemented significant reforms to repair internal systems and prevent bankruptcy in the municipality. They acknowledged the challenges that came with these changes but noted the positive strides made since taking over from the ANC/PA coalition.

The ANC, however, had a different take on Koopman’s resignation. West Coast acting regional secretary, Immanuel Adams, said the resignation was expected due to Koopman’s failure to meet the demands of his constituency. Adams added that the decision reflects self-interest over the well-being of the community. He reaffirmed the ANC’s commitment to restoring accountability and integrity to Klawer and other affected communities.

The ANC emphasised that Koopman’s resignation will not deter its mission to serve the people. The party urged voters to remain vigilant and pledged to continue its fight for a government that prioritises the needs of its citizens.

As of Thursday, Koopman had not responded to requests for comment.
