In a heart-wrenching incident, eight people were killed and three others injured during a shooting at a tavern in Pienaar, Mpumalanga, in the early hours of Saturday morning. Authorities are now in pursuit of a group of armed suspects responsible for the heinous act.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, confirmed the tragic details. Six victims were declared dead on the scene, while two succumbed to their injuries in hospital. Among the casualties, one individual was discovered lifeless inside a bullet-ridden VW Polo, with another vehicle also found at the scene bearing gunshot damage.
Investigation Underway
A specialized team has been assembled to investigate the shooting. Mdhluli emphasized the importance of public cooperation, urging anyone with relevant information to contact the Crime Stop hotline at 08600 10111 or submit tips anonymously via the MYSAPSAPP.
“All information will be treated with strict confidentiality, and callers may remain anonymous,” assured Mdhluli.
Condemnation from Authorities
Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison MEC Jackie Macie strongly condemned the attack, calling for swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“We appeal to the public to allow police the time and space needed to thoroughly investigate this tragedy. The suspects must be urgently apprehended,” Macie said.
He further urged liquor establishments to prioritise the safety of patrons to prevent similar occurrences. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families of the deceased, and we wish the injured a speedy recovery,” he added.
